“Book early to avoid disappointment!”

Nirwa has 4 rooms and 2 ‘bungalows’. I think the rooms have more natural light than the ‘bungalows” especially the upstairs ones, which have great views, but cost a little more. I stayed here for 4 weeks Feb/March 2011. I had a prompt response to my enquiry and it was great to be picked up by Made at the airport, after the long flights from London. Arrival by night, down a canal path, can make it feel like you are in the middle of nowhere..but you awake to the sound of the frogs and the view of rice fields. Go out of the back door and you are in the rice fields and a short walk to a great spa (2 minutes) and Sari Organik restaurant (10 minutes)… and wonderful views. Made, Ayo and their son Alit, are welcoming and fun. The walk home at night down the canal path may not feel comfortable for the solo female traveller, but it is quite safe. A torch (flashlight) is essential! So are shoes that can withstand the rainy season puddles. Your stay here may also be influenced by how well you get on with the other is great to meet over breakfast and exchange ideas.

“The Nirwa family at Nirwa homestay offer a genuine, caring haven for travellers to land.”

4 of 5 starsWe received so much more than a pleasant room to stay with breakfast. The owners a man and wife were genuinely caring, very helpful and inclusive. We felt so safe and right at home in this little oasis right in Ubud. The location is close to the main street and backs up into the rice paddies. So very quite and close to many venues. There was easy interaction with other guests if one wanted this.

“Fantastic Stay!!”

Had a lovely stay after honeymoon. Owners are friendly and very knowledgable and always ready to assist. We loved the breakfast we had everyday – very large and delicious. Rooms clean with large bathrooms. Would recommend Nirwa to anyone who wants to enjoy Balinese culture with a lovely family.

“This is the Place to Start Your Balinese Holiday!!”

Like you probably are, I was unsure where to start my holiday in Bali. So, I read the reviews in Trip Advisor and decided Nirwa would be the launch pad for our family holiday.

I arrived at 9 at night and Made was there to pick me up. It was like meeting a long lost family relative!! He drove us back to Nirwa, where we slept soundly amongst the sounds of the frogs in the paddies! I awoke to a beautiful scented garden scene, and the sight of farmers working in the next door rice paddy. This might sound weird, but I had tears in my eyes! 25 years before, Bali was the same!!!

Made, who is always smiling made me a cup of tea, then Ayu made me her famous banana pancakes and fruit salad. This couple are the nicest people you will meet whilst traveling in Bali. Their homestay truly is a home away from home. It is clean and well maintained, and beautiful! Made and Ayu are the perfect hosts! Made and Ayu also know how to see all the sights and destinations in Bali and can organise it for you as well.

Whenever we return to Bali, this is where we will stay. I would like to thank them for looking after our family whilst in Ubud.

“Thanks for Making our Stay in Ubud so Memorable!”

I missed Nirwa Homestay the moment I left Ubud, especially when I arrived in Kuta. We enjoyed feeling like we stayed in a friend’s home. Made & Ayu were fantastic hosts. We liked the breakfast area very much as we met and talked to other guests during our 4-night stay. The fresh fruit shakes and banana or pineapple pancakes are perfect! I loved the sounds of nature in the evenings and mornings. I understand some may not like it. I had room number 1 which is on the upper level overlooking Nirwa compound and the adjacent rice fields. I think it’s the best room for both the views and privacy. Thanks for making our stay in Ubud so memorable, Made & Ayu!

“Warm and Loving – a Fabulous Place to Base Yourself”

I’ve never posted on TripAdvisor before, but my stay at Nirwa was so terrific that I decided to venture on here for the first time.

Nirwa really has it all. Location – far enough from the hustle and bustle of downtown Ubud such that you can really feel at peace, but just a five-seven minute walk from the center of things. IN the rice paddies, too, so you get a gorgeous sunset out your window each night. Character – you’re essentially staying in Made, Ayu, and Alit’s home, not at a hotel; Nirwa is lushly decorated and lovingly cared for. Food – best banana pancake breakfast I had in Bali, and I stayed in a lot of places during my month on the island. Price – a truly wonderful value. And, most importantly, Hosts – unbeatable. Made and Ayu were warm, interested, informative, and extremely helpful, recommending restaurants, providing for transportation, and even taking me on a private guided all-day tour of northern Bali that was so fabulous that I took the tour again once my travel companions arrived. They’re a special couple. Can’t be beat.

“The Definition of an Amazing Homestay”

We’ve come across lots of different so-called homestays in our travels but none can come close to experience that Made, Adu and Alit offer. From the minute we arrived we were made to feel like part of their family. The homestay itself is set in beautiful surroundings of the paddy fields and we fell asleep every night listening to the gentle hum of the frogs. The rooms are really spacious, incredibly clean and have everything you need including hot water.

The real difference to this and other accommodation in Bali and Ubud is the amazing family that live here. And the incredible breakfast every morning! We ended up staying twice as long as planned because it just felt like home. Nothing is too much trouble, including cooking us dinner one night when the rain was so heavy we couldn’t leave. The homestay is about 7 minutes walk to the main market in Ubud, scooter hire is available at the bottom of the road and we don’t think there can be anywhere better to stay in Ubud, in fact in the whole of Bali. And all of this for great prices. We’re already planning our next trip to stay with them!

“A Little Slice of Heaven”

Words cannot really express how wonderful Nirwa is. Madde and Ayu are amazing people who immediately fold you into their family, offering helpful suggestions and companionship without ever being overburdening. If you’re looking for charm and personal service and a peaceful location where you can asleep to the sounds of gamelan and crickets then this is your place

“I Love Nirwa! You All Made me Feel That I was Home!!”

I am so grateful that I found Nirwa on the website. It was such a peaceful oasis in the midst of Ubud. Made, Ayu, and their son Alit made me feel that I was a beloved member of their family. I never felt alone and I was finally able to relax and rejuvenate after many months of travel. I would recommend Nirwa to anyone.

“A Little Space in Paradise”

I loved this place. Ayu and Made were both very nice and very helpful. The place was very nice and in a very nice location. I wanted two things with my stay and that was quiet time and a place that felt like home. I got both of them there.

One day I had too much sun and didn’t feel too good and Ayu went out of her way to cook me a meal. It was very nice and very thoughtful.

Thanks for everything and I hope to return one day.

“Feeling at Home Away From Home”

We stayed with Ayu and Made for one week and had a wonderful time. We had a beautiful room, with a view over the paddy fields, where you can also make a nice walk starting from the homestay. A nice 8 minutes walk from the centre of Ubud and away from all the noise.

Made and Ayu are very friendly people who can tell you what’s going on in town and the surroundings. Made can take you for a day trip to see all kinds of tourist sites but to your own needs, nothing is a must. They tell you were the nice dances are, sometimes even have tickets for it!! Their breakfast is great, first time I had green pancakes delicious. We will be back. Thank you Michael for this great tip.

Lots of love for all of you, Patricia and Ruud

“If Only There was a Nirwa in Every Town…”

Nirwa is a simple, honest and generous homestay. Recommended to us by friends, Made, Ayu and Alit at Nirwa made us feel right at home from the start. We travelled with our 10 and 5 year old boys – who were easily and graciously accommodated with extra bedding in the bungalow and welcomed by Nirwa’s owners. Our room and bathroom was spotless, the green banana pancakes at fruit salad at breakfast delicious, Made’s tour guiding honest, informative and tailored to our needs, and the rice paddy views delightful. Everything from booking to transport was handled promptly and professionally – right down to transporting us to Padangbai on our last morning. Thank you Made, Ayu and Alit! We loved our stay. Be sure to ask to see Ayu’s artwork – a lovely surprise. Nirwa is a hidden gem of Ubud.

Nirwa is located at the end of cement walk-way by a creek at one end of the main street through Ubud. It looks out on rice paddies and consists of pavilions clustered around the main eating pavilion. Made, Aya and their son Alit are perfects hosts and live in the complex. They know the culture and area intimately and are friendly and free with advice and insights. Made is available if you want to rent a car and driver and plan excursions using Ubud as your home base. They also have a motor scooter that can be rented by the day if you are more adventurous.
I would highly recommend Nirwa if you are the type of traveler who likes being involved in the local culture and doesn’t mind a walk (on level ground) to get to where you are staying. We plan on returning, if nothing else just to see Made, Alit and Aya again.

“A Friendly Home Stay in the Rice Paddies of Ubud”

We were looking for a home stay in Ubud which was owned and ran by local balinese, not too far from Ubud central, and where our one year old would be welcome. Niwa prooved to be this and more; we were picked up from the airport, treated to a feast after the family cerermony and they loved playing with our daughter.

This place in not suited to thoese looking for airconditioning and pools but the beauty of its location amongst the paddy fields and generosity of the family is what made it a memorable stay for us.

“The Best Homestay in Ubud – Highly Recommended”

I cannot recomend Nirwa Homestay enough – the rooms are quiet and in the middle of tranquil rice paddies, the perfect distance away from Ubud’s busy streets, but still an easy stroll.

Made and his family are charming, friendly and so incredibly helpful – they made our stay so special. The rooms are ultra clean, spacious and come with lovely breezy balconies to enjoy a drink on as the sun sets.

Fantastic value for money, generous and delicious breakfasts in beautifully landscaped surrounds, with a lovely family. Stay there!

“Stay at Nirwa!”

I agree with all the positive reviews so far. It is very comfortable for budget accommodation. Made and Ayu (and their adorable teenage son) are lovely, helpful and interesting, and go out of their way to ensure your experience of Ubud is exactly as you want it. I would stay here again and recommend to adults of all ages, couples, groups of friends and families.

The location is great. Very close (5 to 10 min walk) to Ubud centre, but with the added bonus of being amid stunning rice paddies and friendly locals. You must go to Sari Organik restaurant in the rice paddies, it’s amazing.

Made organised heaps of activities for us, including airport transfers, boat transfer to Lombok, volcano climbing, rafting, laundry and short trips around Ubud.

Facilities include: spacious and secure rooms with fan, hot water (most of the time), free internet use, and an amazing breakfast (eggs, toast, fruit salad, tea, coffee and the best banana pancakes we’ve ever come across!).

Thanks Made and Ayu for making our stay in Ubud so good!

“Nirwa – A little piece of paradise!”

Nirwa Homestay, and its delightful hosts, Made, Ayu and their charming son Alit provided everything we were looking for in our first return visit to Bali in more than 30 years; Nirwa is a charming place, close enough to walk comfortably in to Ubud, yet far enough away to be totally tranquil. Just a perfect balance. Made collected us on our arrival at Denpasar, late at night, so we arrived at Nirwa in the dark. We awoke the next morning in our bungalow to look out onto exquisite green paddy fields, then wandered across to the beautiful small open air pavilion, with a carved Garuda looking down on us, to have our breakfast. All this in the midst of their beautiful garden and many shrines, freshly adorned daily in the Balinese way with flowers and offerings. And what a breakfast! A bowl of fresh fruit, bought that morning by Ayu at the market, and either omelette and toast or glorious green banana pancakes. Mmmm, followed by delicious kopi susu, Balinese milk coffee. We felt so comfortable at Nirwa; Made and Ayu provide for a very relaxed stay, while also offering information about local things to see and do. Made took us on a day excursion in his very comfortable vehicle. We loved his no pressure and flexible approach to whatever we wanted to do. Ayu arranged for a massuese to come to Nirwa for us – luxury to be able to just wander out afterwards and sit on our porch and relax. We really had a delightful time staying with the family, and found it hard to leave. We certainly hope to return one day.

“Thankyou Made and Ayu!”

I have just returned from 9 nights at Nirwa Homestay with generous, friendly hosts in a simple, yet comfortable traditional-style homestay – a lovely oasis less than 10 mins walk to the centre of Ubud. Rooms are clean, spacious and simply furnished with lovely views across the rice paddies. Breakfast options are available, but the green banana pancakes are hard to go past! The 5 min canal jungle walk to the entrance is green and serene. If you are looking for clean, comfortable, budget accommodation in a quiet, yet convenient location with lovely Balinese hosts… this is a great option. And it’s only 10 mins walk through the rice paddies to the amazing Sari Organik restaurant. YUM!

“Enjoy a Family Feeling with Bali Family and Foreign Guests in the Middle of Beautiful Rice Paddies.”

Nirwa Home Stay is a beautifully designed and landscaped homstay (bed and breakfast), with spacious rooms with private bathrooms with hot water! at reasonable rates. All units, except one traditional with an open roof , have screened windows and wooden shutters to keep out mostiquitos. They all have fans. It is very clean. You can keep some food and drinks in a communal refigerator and cook yourself a snack if you want. You can eat the provided breakfast in front of your own unit or meet other travelers comfortably around a communal breakfast table to exchange traveling tips. I met several friends that way to take tours with. It is an easy walk to the rice paddies or to town. You walk back from the busy main road along a path following a canal to the homestay so that you hear the sounds of the jungle instead of the noisy road. I felt nourished by the family’s welcoming presence as well as the beautiful rice paddies surrounding it. It was such a beautiful and friendly place, I felt sad to leave it and the family behind.

“Beautiful Charming Homestay with a Warm Welcome!”

Nirwa homestay was one of the best place I’ve been into Indonesia. It’s in a walking distance from the centre of the Ubud. We arrived in the dark and when woke up in the morning it was like we where in paradise: a peaceful, charming and silent oasis in the middle of the rice fields with beautiful and tidy rooms. For breakfast you get delicious banana pancakes and fruit. 6 rooms each with hot water. We’ve slept in the standard rooms and in the 1st floor bungalows. The standard rooms are already very nice, the bungalows are superior. The owner maddi gives you useful information and can take you on on tour with his own private car: to recommend!
In a nutshell: a beautiful and affordable place in the middle of the rice fields and only 5 minutes away from the charming centre of Ubud.

“Perfect. Thank you Nirwa Homestay!”

Wow, besides all the amazing and wonderful things that Ubud city has to offer in terms of holistic, mind-body rejuvenation, one thing I did not expect at all was to be able to find affordable accommodation in such a beautiful, all natural environment such as I did as Nirwa Homestay. At Nirwa, I could relax in its beautiful country setting and still walk into the city quite quickly and easily. Safety, comfort and beauty were definitely what I was looking for as a woman travelling alone and at Nirwa it was not hard to have this perfect trifecta. Moreover, at Nirwa, I had it all at a price that seemed almost unimaginable.
This Bed and Breakfast is completely family run by Made Nirwa and his wife Ayu and their staff who all go out of their way to treat you like family. There are four rooms and two little cottages on the compound where all the rooms and bungalows surround and face a garden patio, in the middle of forests, farms and rice paddies. Although I really enjoyed being in the city everyday with all its sights, sounds, culture and activity, I was thrilled everyday to walk back to the peace of Nirwa. I also was able to enjoy the luxury of an internationally trained masseuse who came to my room every night for a price which would be unheard of in the States. Ayu makes a fresh breakfast every morning which is farm fresh and delicious. Although I was alone, I was also very fortunate to be surrounded by interesting and other delightful guests whom I managed to convene with on most days during the mornings which seemed dreamlike in their surroundings outside in the general eating area.

Nirwa Homestay was a vacation fantasy come true and I can’t wait to come back to Ubud knowing that I have a new home there!

PS: Attn women travelers…Eat, Pray, Love your heart out? Elizabeth Gilbert has turned Ubud into a haven for young female soul seekers! I especially recommend this place to you ladies because it is clean, comfortable, safe, beautiful and you will be taken account of even if you are travelling alone. After being in the city the first day, I could not have thanked my lucky stars more for choosing a homestay not in the heart of the city because unless you like endless bustle and loud temple dance music when you are trying to fall asleep at night, you can never really have a moment’s peace. Nirwa’s is a perfect place to relax and meditate and still just a five minute walk away from the best of Ubud shopping and activities!

“Chilled out Place Not Far From the Centre”

When we arrived, it was late at night and i wondered where the hell I was being brought, as it was up a dark pathway in the middle of nowhere… In the morning I woke up in the surrounded of rice fields which was amazing, as it is still close to the centre. It is beautifully tranquil and i have no problem recommending it. It comes together with resident American aged hippes who have been there a while to complete the Ubud tree hugging yoga vibe..

“This is a Homey, Clean, Charming, Safe, Sweet Place to Call Home in Ubud”

There are lots of homestays in Ubud and I looked at several. This one was the most welcoming. They have 6 guest rooms in a beautiful, lush, tropical garden; it’s more accurately a bed & breakfast, rather than a guest house. They clean the rooms daily, include a delicious and ample breakfast, free internet, and offer all the “guiding” services that you might want, including rides to and from the airport, local rides, & trips around the island of Bali. Nirwa is owned and operated by a lovely couple, Made (pronounced Mah-Day) and Ayu, with help from their sweet teenage son. If there is something you want to see or do, Made will help you. They have no additional staff, preferring instead to take care of everything themselves. The two upstairs rooms are the lightest and one has the best view; all the rooms are nice. The homestay is located on the edge of town, by the well-known “rice paddy walk.” It’s a pleasant 10 minute walk from the center of town and, as a single woman, I felt safe walking back and forth, even at night. I recommend this homestay highly, for anyone, including single people, for a night or two, or extended stays.
